Epidural. That's all I have to say. If you go with the epidural, you'll be pleasantly surprised. :) I can't wait to see pictures of your little one! And you should post some belly pictures!!!
Heather, this is going to sound stupid, but bear with me... it doesn't have to be terrifying - child birth is in short - INCREDIBLE!!!
Whether you decide to have pain medication or not, keep your mind in the mode of amazing, you were made to do this, it's all worth it. You have to sort of let the pain be okay, you have to know that like a marathon, it's hard but the rewards are beyond description.
It IS labor, it's not easy, but that's what makes it special - you will come away, thinking WOW, I did that, my body did that and now look what I have, a beautiful little person to share life with.
There's a connection made through nature when you sacrifice so much. It was intended, I have no doubt in that.
Sorry for responding in such a philosophical way, but it's just how I feel about pregnancy, and birth.
How exciting! It's been so hard for me not to spend a lot of money on the baby already. Not knowing the gender at this point helps a little, but we'll know in two weeks and then I'm going to have to exercise some serious self control. I'm due Feb 25, by the way.
I'm also hoping to avoid the hospital and pain thing all together. We're planning to have the baby at home. :D If you haven't already taken some kind of labor/birth preparation class, you could look into Hypnobabies or Hypnobirthing. They're all about using relaxation and eliminating fear from the process through education to help you through labor. I haven't done any of the courses or read the books yet myself, but I hear absolutely wonderful things about them from people who have.
However it goes for you, meeting your little girl will be worth whatever you go through to get there. Love you!
Oh Heather! It's the whole unknown part that is so scary! But just enjoy the fun parts now - all of the shopping and preparing. And when you hold that precious little baby in your arms it will make all of the rest completely fade away. Can't wait to meet this little one. :)
I love buying baby things!! It's so much fun. As for the labor and hospital; that is my favortie part of being pregnant and having a baby. Ya, it can hurt, but the excitement and joy of getting that baby here is soooo great. My advice it to get an epidural. It will make it so much more enjoyable (from my experience) and you will be able to relax and concentrate on something other than the pain. There is nothing wrong with not feeling the pain. My philosophy is that someone invented the epidural so it can be used!! ha.
My two cents... avoid being induced if you can. Dwight's wasn't induced and it was a positive experience. Pitocin makes the contractions more intense than what your body naturally produces. I believe in the epidural too. :)
A vaginal birth is smoother in the long run. A c-section is fine, but a normal delivery was more pleasant (for me).
I am so excited for you guys. Little girls are so much more fun as far as the shopping possibilities go and all. I was going to send you a baby present so will you email me your address in Az when you get a chance. Good thinking on your part to work at baby Gap for awhile and stock up-I wish I'd have thought of that before having Becca.
Ben and Heather-first of all-we love you. It was so great seeing you guys after so much time. Secondly, I will usually be the guy giving shallow comments on the blog so here it goes. People have too many opinions about child birth and I'm a guy ,so most feminists will hate me either way. Natural birth sounds like the lamest thing ever-do you want to take pain medication for a head ache or having cavity filled or go through it "naturally"? If someone told me they got a cavity filled without pain medication I'd congratulate them on being an idiot. That being said, I'm sure giving birth isn't awesome and I was so bored sitting there for so long, but the baby that comes out is pretty awesome (after they clean it). It's going to come home to a rad home with rad parents and that's all that matters. Can't wait for you guys to get that lil sucker out here.
I almost forgot my favorite "natural" birth argument-"Women have been having babies naturally for centuries..." I might hit someone in the neck if I ever hear this again. People have also been dying for centuries for many different reasons, but it's something I believe we are trying to prevent-such as your husband who many have been called a Witch Dr. centuries ago. Now we just call him a Dr. who saves lives (or eyes...same thing). If you do decide to have it natural I won't judge (yes, yes I will) ;)
I was thinking about you today and thought I would stop by at your blog to see what you are up to. I'm SOO EXCITED for your sweet little baby girl to come!! I LOVE girls. As far as natural vs. epidural. I've done both. I had Mylee naturally, not by choice. It really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and I felt so invigorated and proud of myself!! With Kelsey and Lanaea, I had an epidural. My epidural wouldn't work on one side with both of them, but eventually both my drs. were able to get it working correctly. With Lanaea I was REALLY glad I had the epidural because they had to cut me (with Kelsey too) and pull her out with forcepts (dangerously low heart rate). You never know what kind of complications will come up. If you decide to go natural--all power to you--be prepared though for more then just labor pain--ie. episiotmy, forcepts, pitosin, etc. Good Luck!! Can't wait to meet her!!
Haha, I like those comments from that Ryan Smart guy. Good arguments. I am totally with you, Heather, on the freakiness of giving birth (since I've never done it either). Just tonight my sister-in-law announced that she's pregnant (with her first) and she's going to have it naturally, so my husband and I were talking about that... I don't care how people slice it, having a baby just doesn't sound pleasant to me, and I think I'd definitely rather take advantage of the pain killers if I could. I see technology and modern medicine as blessings from God. But to each her own. I'm seriously afraid of just passing out because just the smell of hospitals and sight of needles makes me want to pass out (and I have passed out before just seeing needles). But when I get the epidural I'll tell them, "DON'T SHOW ME THE NEEDLE." Anyway, how did this turn out to be all about me? ...Sorry... I can't offer you much advice since I have no idea, but I'm sure you'll do great and your baby will be really cute!!! Good luck and I can't wait to see the photos when she comes!!!

Oh Heather. This is so crazy. You'll be great! It's one day. You can do it! I can't wait to see her little face! So I can squish it!
Now repeat this to me when I go through it.
