Anyone have a favorite book, or something they're read lately that caught their attention??
I've recently started reading a lot more in my free time (it's the only thing keeping me sane during this crazy 4th year) and I'm struggling to know what to read. I hate to admit it, but I've never been a big reader, so I feel like I've missed out on so many great books I hardly know where to start.
I think my problem has always been finding the right type of book to read. I've always viewed reading as something strictly educational, and as a result, I have sitting in my bookshelf a ton of half read history books that I could never really get that into.
Just recently I've started reading fiction, and have found a new love!! I can't believe I've been missing out for so long!
So...I'm taking suggestions. What are those books that you just love? You know, the one you can't put down, or the one that you've reread over and over.
I'm currently working on "The Glass Castle" (not actually fiction, but incredibly interesting), and up next is a recommendation from a friend to read "The Secret Life of Bees", but I'm moving fast....so bring on your recommendations!

Heather - Thanks for your words of encouragement! Sean just had his first anatomy exam, and it didn't go so hot. It's been a rough weekend. I'm not worried about it, but you know how it is. All these kids are used to being the top of their class. Put them all together and some of them have to give up that spot! Anyway, we're enjoying this time so far. Everyone says it goes by fast. I can't believe that Ben is in his fourth year. As far as reading goes, I'm just like you! I've never read for plessure either! Until recently that is. I read the book Tara Road by Mauve Binchy about a year ago. That one is pretty good. I'm also totally embarrassed to admit it, but some of my friends here got me into the Twilight series. To be honest, I've really liked the books! Well, I've only read the first two, so I don't know how the whole series is, but Twlight and New Moon are good. Just don't tell anyone that I suggested them. I'm an "in the closet Twilight reader." :) I miss you and hope you're doing well!!!
I really liked the Glass Castle as well. I just finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and I really enjoyed it and it was a super fast read. Some books I've read with book club and enjoyed are: Crow Lake, A Thousand Splendid Suns (although a bit emotional), The Last Lecture, The Princess Academy, and I liked Three Cups of Tea, but it took me a while to finish that one. I also like Dan Brown books, but they're fairly intense. On my list of books to read are: Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, My Sister's Keeper, and The Help. My all time favorite book is East of Eden. You'll have to let me know what books you read and like.
I just read the Princess Academy and loved it! I'm getting ready to read Hunger Games and they just came out with the second in the series - I've heard from everyone how awesome it is, so I'll let you know about that one. As for my favorite books to read, I'm a big fan of church historical fiction... I love the Fishers of Men series by Gerald Lund - takes place during the time of Christ. Loved the whole series by Dean Hughes... Children of the Promise and then Hearts of the Children - they take place during the first and second world war. Oh, and there's a series by Jerry Borrowman that's Historical Fiction during the wars - Till the Boys Come Home. I loved all of them! Happy Reading!
I sooo wish we were together so we could play while our boys are busy and gone all the time. I too am finding myself with a lot of lonely nights and not enough shows to watch or books to read to keep me busy. :) I especially was wishing we were together while our boys were intensely busy with the Big Fantasy Draft night. Silly boys ... are you ready for basketball season to start?! I don't think I am! :)
OK Heather...good for you!!! I LOVE three boks by Nancy Turner. They are called These Is My Words, Sarah't Quilt and The Star Garden. They need to be read in that order. Also...the COunt of Monte Cristo is amazing!!!! And I love the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series - super fun! And most recently I am raving over The Outliers - super interesting!!!!! Miss you!!!! Any trips to Tucson planned lately?
Okay, I have one more. I personally liked Goose Girl more than The Princess Academy (written by the same author), but I really liked them both. I also liked The Number 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. Did you read Harry Potter? I can't remember. It looks like you have a lot of great suggestions.
I'm currently reading Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman and Surprised By Joy by C.S. Lewis (his conversion story). They are both beautifully written and engaging. And so far I'm happy with them
Here are some other recommendations...
Adolescent Fiction - I agree with Goose Girl, also Thief by Megan Whalen Turner or The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
Classic fiction - North & South by Elizabeth Gaskell
Fiction - If you like Jane Austen, check out Georgette Heyer (wrote during the 1930s-1940s about the regency era); my mom loves her and i grew up reading them; i just introduced kathryn to them and she is hooked now too. I would suggest starting with Regency Buck, Lady of Quality or Convenient Marriage.
Poetry - anything by Billy Collins
Non-Fiction - Predictably Irration by Dan Ariely, it's been a while since I read it but I remember really liking Pilgram of Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard
Michelle beat me to it - I absolutely ADORE These is my Words (series), I am actually rereading it now, I blew through the first 175 pages in one day - even with the munchkins! It may very well be my favorite series of all time.
Hurah for reading, sometimes its my only solace!
My sister contributes to a book review blog by LDS girls that I check out alot. It's easy to navigate and well organized. I trust the reviewers and very straight-forward. Check out:

I liked the "Hunger Games" series by Suzanne Collins too.
Thanks for all the great suggestions!! I've got so much reading to do now, I can't wait!
I like love stories. I have only read 4 books in the last oh 10 years. Austenland and the Sisterhood of the Traveling pants series. I know they are meant for teenagers. But maybe I'll try one of theses mentioned here.
